Event Description
This interactive training is for staff working with children and young people in specialist settings. The session is designed to enhance your understanding of safeguarding and child protection, helping you to navigate complex situations and promote the safety and wellbeing of the children and young people you support.
Through teaching, discussion and case studies, we will:
· Clarify the language of safeguarding and child protection
· Examine the higher risks faced by pupils with additional support needs and the unique challenges in identifying risk
· Recap key legislation, policies, and processes, and explore how this informs practice in the classroom
· Discuss effective holistic assessments and how you can work collaboratively with parents and other professionals
· Reflect on ways in which you can understand what a pupil’s behaviours are communicating.
We will also spend time discussing staff wellbeing and how you can cope with the emotional challenges of your role.
By the end of this session, you will:
· Feel more confident about responding to safeguarding concerns in a special needs setting
· Feel better equipped to assess a child’s needs as part of a collaborative approach
· Have more knowledge about how to apply processes and policy to practice
· Know ways that help you to look after yourself, as you support others.
We are delighted to welcome Dr Kirstie Rees to deliver this session. Kirstie is a specialist educational and child psychologist with extensive experience in learning disabilities, neurodiversity, and mental health. Her training helps staff to understand and address the individual needs of pupils with additional support needs, whilst at the same time creating safe and inclusive learning environments. She has delivered training and workshops at conferences both in the UK and oversees and is the author of the book: The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties: An Educator’s Guide, published by Jessica Kingsley.
